Former Pakistan captain and one of the best forwards in the game’s history Shahbaz Senior said on Wednesday that the officials in the current PHF set-up are only interested in saving their jobs and not sincere about promoting the game.
“People like myself don’t want to work with the present Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) management as I feel they are selfish and want to latch onto their jobs at any cost.”
Shahbaz said that PHF President Qasim Zia, and Secretary Asif Bajwa are spending the federation’s money on their own expenses rather than for promotion of the game.
“I told the PHF a number of times that I could do the coaching job free of cost but a delay on their part to commit anything has made me lose interest and now I just share my views with the media.
“We have got a lot of talent in the country but it needs to be dug out and for that the PHF should organise a talent hunt programme to look for the young, talented players from all over the country and should train them from the grass-roots level,” he advised.
Commenting on the skills and expertise of the Dutch coach, Michel van den Heuvel, Shahbaz said he believes the Dutch coach lacks communication skills with the players which a Pakistani coach could have done with good results.
“A Pakistani coach who has played enough hockey for the country such as Shahnaz Sheikh, Tahir Zaman and many others can coach the team in a lot better way than a coach from any foreign country.”
